Description
The SLC24A5 gene, found on human chromosome 15, consists of 396 amino acid molecules that regulate the function and growth of melanocytes in the body. Research has shown that SLC24A5 gene activity is consistent across species; increased activity leads to greater numbers of melanocytes and higher secretion of melanin, resulting in darker skin. Conversely, organisms with lower SLC24A5 activity have fewer melanocytes and secrete less melanin, leading to lighter skin tone. Scientists in Switzerland have isolated a specific group of SLC24A5 inhibitor III that has demonstrated powerful inhibitory effects on the SLC24A5 gene, suppressing it in vitro and in vivo. This is the only known method to lighten skin tone through genetic means.
